A Note from the Artist:
I’ve always been fascinated by the eyes of animals. There’s something about looking closely into their faces that makes you feel a connection with them.
With this gorilla, I wanted the eyes to be the centre of attention.
Rather than drawing the whole animal, I chose to concentrate on that extraordinary expression, the depth of the eyes and the wonderful textures and shadows surrounding them.
Gorillas are incredibly powerful animals, yet their faces can convey such gentleness, thoughtfulness and vulnerability.
The Cross River gorilla is particularly precious because so few remain in the wild. These remarkable creatures live in remote forests and their future depends upon us protecting the places they call home.
When I look at this picture, I find myself wondering what the gorilla is thinking and what those eyes have seen.
That’s what I love about drawing wildlife. Sometimes a single expression can tell a story without needing any words at all.
I hope this artwork encourages people to look a little closer at these magnificent creatures and appreciate just how much we share with the natural world.
