Endangered Black-Crested Gibbon. Original artwork by Julia Griffith.
With its soulful eyes, distinctive dark fur and beautiful pale cheek markings, the black-crested gibbon is one of the most captivating primates in the natural world.
Native to parts of Southeast Asia, these remarkable animals spend much of their lives high in the forest canopy, moving gracefully between the trees and communicating through extraordinary singing calls.

A Note from the Artist:
There’s something incredibly moving about the faces of primates. Their expressions can seem so familiar that it’s almost impossible not to feel a connection with them.
With this gibbon, the wonderful contrast between the dark fur and pale cheeks creates such a distinctive face.
I particularly love the eyes. They seem to hold an expression of quiet curiosity, as though the little gibbon is studying us just as carefully as we’re studying it.
One of the things I enjoy about creating animal portraits is discovering how much character can be captured in the smallest details.
Gibbons are extraordinary creatures, beautifully adapted to life among the treetops. Yet, like so many animals in my endangered collection, their future is threatened by the loss of their forest homes.
I wanted this artwork to celebrate their individuality and remind us that every species has its own place and importance in the natural world.
Sometimes the smallest, quietest faces can leave the biggest impression.
