Womanhood. Original artwork by Julia Griffith.
From the tiny, helpless baby at the beginning to the older woman becoming a little more fragile again at the other end, this artwork follows the changing stages of a woman’s life.
It isn’t meant to tell one particular woman’s story. It is simply a line of life, growing, changing, becoming independent, moving through adulthood and eventually growing older. Somewhere along that line, most of us can probably point to a figure and think, “That’s about where I am.”
There is one very obvious difference in the Womanhood design: pregnancy makes an appearance in the middle but the woman immediately afterwards looks remarkably tidy for someone who is apparently bringing up a child. I think quite a few women will look at her and think, “Yes… that wasn’t quite how I remember it!”
I wanted the picture to be affectionate rather than serious. We change enormously throughout our lives, but every stage belongs to us, the little girl, the young woman, the grown woman and the older woman are all part of the same extraordinary journey.
A Note from the Artist:
This isn’t my own life story, for one thing, I had two pregnancies, not one! It is simply my way of showing the stages we pass through and how quickly life seems to move once you look at the whole thing in one line.
And yes, I know the new mum looks far too tidy. We can probably all relate to that one.
