Butterflies. Original artwork by Julia Griffith.
This design began with an old table I bought for around £40.
It was nothing particularly special when I found it but I could see what it might become. I decorated it with delicate rice-paper butterflies, arranging them so that they seemed to spiral and drift across the surface rather than simply sit in neat rows.
That feeling of movement is what stayed with me. Butterflies are so light and fleeting that they never really seem still and I wanted the artwork to have that same sense of movement, as though they might lift away at any moment.
I love taking something ordinary and giving it a second life and that little table became something completely different once the butterflies appeared.
A Note from the Artist:
This artwork grew out of one of those projects where you start with something inexpensive and slightly forgotten and end up completely transforming it.
The butterflies gave that old table its personality, and I loved the effect so much that the idea found its way into my artwork too.
